Zombie Star Trek!

Not a hoax! Not a dream! Not an imaginary story!
Quirk Books has created a trailer for its novel Night of the Living Trekkies, which I didn't even know was a thing. And now I have to have it!

From TrekMovie.com:

"Quirk Books, who specialize in ‘mashup’ fiction like "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" have a new book out that imagines a zombie outbreak at a Star Trek convention called "Night of the Living Trekkies". Quirk has now created a trailer for the book. The video is pretty funny and shows this idea has some comedy potential, so maybe someone will option this book for a movie or a TV show."

You know what else I didn't know was a thing? Shatnerquake.

Zombies! Brains! Science!

I love a good zombie movie. Lucky for me it's been a pretty rich sub-genre (zombies have certainly been more successful that werewolves.) I've always had one teensy little problem with the whole "zombie apocalypse" scenario, though. If you're under assault by an army that is slowly decaying, isn't your best course of action simply to ...wait?

Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Steven C. Schlozman has offered a theory of sorts on "necro-diagnostics," which was part of  the "Science on Screen" lecture series at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass.

"In the movies, zombies are always hungry, no matter how many supporting actors they consume. The most likely explanation is that zombies don't have a properly functioning ventromedial hypothalamus: the region of the brain that lets you know whether you've eaten enough. The result is hyperphagia. Zombies will eat and eat and eat, but never feel satiated."

Mexican Zombies!

Here's a trailer for a film titled Zombes del Bicentenaro. Or not. Information about the film isn't readily available so it's possible the trailer is just a joke. Truth be told, I really really hope it's not.

College offers zombie course

When I was in school, these kinds of things only happened when the professor was hungover and/or sick of looking at their students.

From UPI:
A University of Baltimore professor said he is basing his English 333 curriculum around zombies.
Arnold Blumberg said his class will involve screening 16 zombie film classics, zombie comic books as required reading and the option for students to write a screenplay or draw storyboards for their ideal zombie movies as final projects, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday.

This isn't the stupidest idea for a college course that I've ever heard of. Didn't someone once offer a course on the films of Keanu Reeves? (People Magazine says "Yes.")

An afternoon eluding zombies

The above image may not accurately reflect
the content of the following post.

It was supposed to be a light day at the gym. An hour of cardio on the treadmill, maybe a little more if I was in the mood. That was the plan.

Instead, I spent the afternoon running for my life as the living dead pursued me across back country roads.

It's a cool, sunny day, one of the few we're likely to have in a part of the country known for its oppressive heat and humidity. I've also had an app for my phone for about a month that I wanted to try out: Zombie Run.

Using GPS and Google Maps, Zombie Run is an app that lets you add a bit of imagination to your walk. Just select your destination, begin your journey and try not to get eaten by the "zombies" represented on the map in green and red icons.

I'd never been able to seriously put the Zombie Run app into use so was amused to see three "zombies" emerge from a pond by the side of the road and head my way. I had to pick up my speed but easily eluded them.

Before long I had a small army of zombies on my trail. They weren't any immediate danger, but the woods on either side of me cut off most of my avenues for escape. Then, ahead on the map, three more zombies appeared and blocked my path.

Around this time a big, yellow hunting dog popped out of the woods, ran by me and disappeared back into the trees. Unlike the zombies this was an actual dog and not part of the game. Thanks to my headphones (I was listening to MF Doom) I didn't hear the animal coming and was a little spooked. I think that qualifies the game as a success.

With a little running I was able to avoid the zombies that had cut off my path. Combined with the SportyPal app I was able to measure the time, distance and calories burned during the game.
I had the game set on its easiest level which puts the zombies on par with those in the original Dawn of the Dead (moving about 2 mph.) The hardest level ramps the speed up to 8 mph and would probably make Zach Snyder shit hit pants.

Zombie Run seems to be fairly early in the development and has some room for improvement. It would be great if multiple players could use the same map simultaneously, and I wouldn't turn my nose up at adding a weapon to the game. Maybe a "lottery" style weapon selection that randomly assigns you a gun and limited ammunition. As it is, it's still a fun little romp.

The Post-Apocalyptic Zombie Workout

Here's a cool app I'm currently running on my Droid:
ZOMBIE, RUN!

Here's the write-up:
"The Zombie, Run! Zombie Finder is a survival tool for people living in a zombie-infested area. Zombie, Run! displays the location of nearby zombies, helping you safely navigate your urban or rural area."
This app uses Google Maps and GPS to create a physical game that's also a pretty good workout. Just select the destination you want to walk to and the game will put red and green dots on the map to represent different levels of zombies (some are more aggressive than others.) If you're "spotted" the dots will come after you. All you have to do is get from the starting point to your destination without getting bitten. It can turn a 10 minute walk into a 30 minute walk.

Here's a video of the developers testing the software:

In the meantime, here's another zombie-related website I'm currently wading through: www.zombieplace.com. Enjoy!
